First stage wiki deployment
If we choose to use wiki technology, we could use the following structure. These items would be fairly easy to set up. They can each start small and be grown over time.
Welcome page
- Contains an introduction to the wiki site and links to the wiki areas.
Workshop areas
Location: /workshops
- Contains a wiki page for each workshop in oxford science.
Basic information: Address, phone, email.
- Can contain sub-pages for projects, equipment current and past projects. Can contain pictures of completed components (talk to the photography unit).
Home pages
Location: / -- wiki homepages currently go in the root, which can get messy if there are very many pages. I is possible to set up a separate 'people wiki' for homepages, but some custom code might be required to make it function smoothly.
Individuals can have their own wiki pages at FirstnameLastname. If this grows very large, it can be moved to a separate page.
Blogs
Location: /blogs
Front page acts as a blog aggregation (see planet.debian for an example).
- Subpages contains individual blogs, like /blogs/keith /blogs/robert, etc.
- We can easily use the Moin wiki to run a basic blog. It's not as powerful as Wordpress or pybloxym, but it lets us keep it simple. If blogs really take off, then we can set up a proper blog portal at its own URL later. It would be much worse to set up a fancy blogging system and have it remain mostly empty for a long time.
Talks
Location: /talks
- Contains an overview of talks and seminars in the science division. There is a finite number of these. Guest speakers are typically invited by academics, some are planned at the start of term, while other seminars (e.g. brown bag) are planned at short notice.
Possible future developments
These topics would also potentially benefit from wiki technology, but require a bit more work to implement.
Lectures
Lecture lists already exist here. Is there any advantage to having this on the wiki instead?
Notice board
Location: /notices
- The 1001 notices that currently circulate by email. These could be posted here in a central location. Most people would initially never check this page though, so it would be advisable to send out a weekly email to everyone with a summary of this list.
Tutorials
Location: /tutorials
- Tutorials are key to the Oxford system. It can be difficult to explain their true value to outsiders, so it would be useful to open a window on how they work. This section could contain views on the tutorial system from tutors and students. [Other ideas on how this would work?
